Hikari ("Light"), the red-haired girl that you see in the opening clip, has been kidnapped. Rance gets the mission from his boss (the bald guy) to investigate the case. In this game, Rance is somewhat like a detective, which also turns the whole game into more of a detective-like exploring game as opposed to the RPG or RPG/strategy style of game that the latter installments use. Rance isn’t alone in his job; he has a helper - 16 year old Sill helps him, who is actually Rance's slave. She was originally from a rich family but was kidnapped by bandits and sold as a slave. The one who bought her was, of course, Rance. Now, with her help, Rance has to solve this mystery, bring Hikari back, and pay back the ones who are at fault.
Rance - A warrior, adventurer, and detective. He isn't very wise or clever but is pretty strong and very perverted. However, the people that have played the later games of Rance will notice that the Rance in this game isn't that bad compared to the others and isn't thinking about perverted things all the time.
Sill - A slave of Rance who helps him in his adventures as a partner in battlefield and in bed. She was kidnapped by bandits and then sold to Rance, and since then she has been traveling together with him. Is very weak in terms of strength but is good at magic. Very devoted to Rance due to the spell of obedience cast on her by slavers.
Hikari ("Light") - A girl who has mysteriously disappeared. It's her case that Rance has to solve in this game.
