This is the second game of the Alice Soft Rance series, remade in 2009 and released in Alice 2010 . Since the original Rance 2 and Rance 02 (the remake) have the same gameplay and story, this article will use information and images from the remade version for better visuals.
Story
Edit
Ten years prior to the story, four young girls in the town of Kathtom were appointed as disciples to an old mage named Ragishss. They were to be raised as mages and work as the town's guardians after their training completed. However, after the ten years, the girls suddenly rebelled against Ragishss and killed him, and during the harsh magic battle the entire town was entombed underground and a barrier spell was put on it, preventing anyone from leaving, including the maidens who terrorized the town.
This is when Rance appears. With Sill at his side, he takes the job of defeating the magical maidens and saving the town.? But, after some research, he finds out that the true power of the maidens comes from their four rings. The rings give a great boost of magical power to its bearers, and they each correlate to a certain element. Since the rings work only on maidens, the only apparent way to release the rings from the maidens is to take their virginity, and who else but Rance is up to the job?
Spoilers ahead.
Rance later discovers that the girls are not the real villains, but rather it was Ragishss all along. The rings not only enhance ability, but are also able to sap magic power from virgin sorceresses and convert it into energy that is later sent to a central receptacle, in this case, Ragishiss himself. After collecting a total amount of magic power equal to that of of 40 maidens, the rings are said to be able to grant a mage unlimited power. The de facto leader of the girls, Masou Shizuka, figured out Ragishss's plan and rebelled against him to prevent his plan from succeeding. However, it was too late - the cursed rings could not be removed and the curse began to drive the maidens insane. They are now sheltered in the labyrinth beneath the town and are abducting young girls from the town and killing everyone who tries to go into the labyrinth to stop them. Rance must now not only defeat the powerful girls and reclaim the rings, but defeat Ragishss and stop his ascent to power.
Trivia
Edit
The girl depicted on the cover art of Rance 1 and Rance 2 doesn't actually appear in either of those games. The girl is Nagi su Ragarl, who shows up in future Rance games.
However, Nagi appears in side material released around the same time as Rance 1 and 2.
